Before he designed the Disney Concert Hall, Frank Gehry also designed the Binoculars Building in the Venice neighborhood of LA. MJT creator Robert Wilson used part of his MacArthur genius grant to build this lovely rooftop garden and aviary. It may be one of the worst kept secrets in LA, but the Japanese garden at the DoubleTree (formerly the Kyoto Grand) is still pretty lovely. Just take the elevator to the third floor for a half acre of waterfalls, bamboo, and stone paths. From a lighthouse in Crescent City, to trees changing colors in the Sierra, to funky art installations near the Salton Sea, these are the best things to do in the Golden State in the fall. The Villa is modeled after a first-century Roman country house, the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, Italy.

There were several votes for the view from inside Dodger Stadium, which surely must make owner Magic Johnson and his partners proud. Well, there’s also the fact that the Dodgers are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, which makes the view from Chavez Ravine that much prettier and also one of the best views in Los Angeles at night. Dodger Stadium celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, and it continues to be regarded as one of the country's great ballparks. The unprepossessing brown brick exterior of the Bradbury Building (304 Broadway at West 3rd Street) in Downtown LA, doesn't hint at its spectacular interior. Unlike the buildings on the previous pages, this is not one that you can appreciate on a drive by. You have to take the time to park and go inside, where intricately carved wood and wrought iron filigree are lit from above by a domed atrium.

The 87-acre Garden is renowned as one of the world’s first botanical gardens to be developed over a sanitary landfill. The reclamation project began in April 1961 with the planting of 40,000 donated trees. Today, the Garden's collection of more than 200,000 plants attracts visitors from around the world, including then-Prince Charles, now King Charles III. A native of Iran, Dialameh regularly hiked the Mineral Wells trail through Toyon Canyon on his way across Griffith Park, before a major brush fire devastated the area in 1971. After obtaining permission from city officials, Dialameh cleared the charred tree stumps. Over the years, he planted pine and jacaranda trees for shade, along with rose bushes, geraniums, oleander, and yucca, transforming the barren hillside into a beautiful oasis. Dialameh also built stairs to the picnic area and added colorful wooden benches. Today his gift to Los Angeles is maintained by volunteers and volunteer groups, with assistance from the City of L.A. The Capitol Records Building near Hollywood and Vine was designed by architect Welton Becket in 1956 to resemble a stack of vinyl 45 records. Today it’s a landmarked collection of weird Old West art surrounded by trees and trails.
